Doc Schoenbaum – Harvey Cohen Golf Classic
Each year, the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Foundation has the honor of sponsoring the Bernard “Doc” Schoenbaum Golf Classic. Bernard “Doc” Schoenbaum (1914-1989) was former collegiate and club lax player who played most of his lacrosse in New York City. He was so inspirational and loved by those who knew him that when the started a youth lax program in the City, they named it “Doc’s New York City Youth Lacrosse.”

October of 2007, Mr. Regan co-founded the organization in honor of his son, Sgt. James J. Regan, who was killed in actionin Iraq on February 9, 2007 while serving with the 3rdBattalion, 75thRanger Regiment. The Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund was created as a way to give back to Jimmy’s brothers in arms, the U.S. Army Rangers.Through health, wellness and financial aid programs, Lead The Way Fund provides support to the families of Rangers who have died, have been disabled or who are currently serving in harm’s way around the world.After seeing first-hand the tremendousneed, Mr. Regan has made it his mission to fill the gaps for these men that the government is unable to.In 2015, he was inducted as an Honorary Member of the 75thRanger Regiment Hall of Fame for his dedication to the men and families of this elite unit. In 2017, Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund washonored with the prestigious Patriot Award,established by the Commander of the United States Special Operations Commandin 2007, whichrecognizesindividuals who greatly support SOF wounded warriors, their families, or surviving family members by providing significant and enduring contributions.Mr. Regan, who officially retired in 2009,has over three decades of experience in the financial services industry,with extensive experience in interest rate trading and capital market credit sales. Prior to co-founding Army Ranger Lead The Way Fund, Mr. Regan was Senior Vice President of Capital Markets at Keefe, Bruyette and Woods specializing in investment portfolio and balance sheet management.Mr. Regan’s love and passion for the game of Lacrosse started at a young age. Hegrew up in Massapequa Park playing High School Lacrosse,then went on to play Club Lacrosse at the University of Miami, where he graduated with a Bachelors in Business Administration(BBA)specializing in Finance. With threeyoung girls at homeandnowhere to play lacrosse, Mr. Regan, a Director of Manhasset PAL,was inspired todevelop the Women’s Lacrosse Program for the Manhasset Community and is responsible for the fundamental success of the Manhasset Program. The Classic is organized by two of our hardest working Board Members, Billy Rebman and Howie Borkan, and the event has a great purpose. All of the funds raised during the Classic are given to the Calvary Hospital and youth lacrosse programs in our area. Calvary Hospital is an acute care specialty hospital that provides palliative care for adult advanced cancer patients.

The Classic is held at the Tam O’Shanter Club in Upper Brookville, New York, and typically takes place on the first or second weekend in October. It is a fun-filled day with a great cause and includes, in addition to a round of golf at a great course, a cocktail hour and dinner complete with raffles.
