Goalie Devon Wills Named MVP as Sound Defeats Boston Storm in UWLX Championship Game, 13-8

BALTIMORE (Sunday, July 31, 2016) – History was made on Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., as the Long Island Sound defeated the Boston Storm in the inaugural United Women’s Lacrosse League (UWLX) Championship Game, 13-8. With the win, Long Island became the first-ever champions in professional women’s lacrosse history, and the team also saw goalie Devon Wills leave with additional hardware after being named the Most Valuable Player of the title match.

Long Island opened their account first in this contest, with Hillary Fratzke putting away the initial goal of the game. However, Kayla Treanor quickly answered with a pair of tallies for Boston before Katrina Dowd responded to make it level at two apiece. Treanor and Kristin Igoe then struck with back-to-back notches before an exchange between Alice Mercer and Kara Cannizzaro made it a 5-3 count in favor of Boston.

In the final five minutes of the opening half, the Sound finished out the first session with three straight scores, including a pair by Lindsay Scott and a third from Katie Rowan. With the late rally, Long Island took a 6-5 edge into the intermission.

The Sound continued that hot streak into the second half, with Kelly McPartland, Dowd and Fratzke recording the first three finishes of the frame to make it six consecutive goals and put up a 9-5 score line.

Despite the Long Island run, the resilient Storm maintained their focus and responded with three straight tallies from Igoe, Lauren Kahn and Treanor to close the gap to 9-8. However, the Sound would not allow Boston to get any closer.

Dowd first ended the Storm rally with her third finish of a hat trick, and Long Island then closed out the match with another three consecutive scores from Becca Block, Taryn VanThof and Alyssa Leonard to hang the final 13-8 count.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock and the horn sounded to conclude the inaugural season of the UWLX, the Sound sideline raced onto the field in jubilation, once they successfully doused head coachShannon Smith with a cooler of water, of course. Since the first weekend of the regular season, Long Island held at least a share of first place on the UWLX Table, and Sunday afternoon solidified them as the best team in professional women’s lacrosse.

The UWLX now heads into its first offseason with many plans already in the works for its sophomore campaign. To keep up with all of the latest announcements as they occur, make sure to stay locked into UnitedWLax.com.
